Chiropractic focuses on optimizing the function of the nervous system. The nervous system controls every function of the body, and is divided into two main parts: the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS is made up of the nerves that go everywhere else in the body, like the internal organs, arms, and legs. Sometimes, interferences in the nervous system can prevent it from functioning at its' optimal level. Chiropractors call an area of interference a subluxation. Sometimes subluxations cause pain, but because only about 10% of the nervous system's function is pain, it is probable that the interference will not cause pain. Despite not generating pain, these interferences disrupt normal nervous system flow and can prevent the brain from communicating well with the rest of the body. To allow the nervous system to function optimally and thus, allow the body to heal itself, chiropractors use specific chiropractic adjustments to remove any detected subluxations. Without interference, the body and brain can communicate more freely and allow for the body to heal the best that it possibly can.
